Nuestro Proyecto

Gypsies in Mexico, comprise a little approached population by social sciences. Nevertheless, the contact they have established with populations from villages and cities of the country, has existed since their arrival to the Mexican territory. Eventually they have become Mexican Gypsies. To this day, these contacts relate to fortune telling, theater-variety shows, and selling and purchasing of automobiles, and trading carried out amongst families roaming through villages and cities of the northern part of the country, or to heavy machinery repairs in different regions of Mexico. In this latter activity, they are not identified as gypsies, as nomination is not essential for these transactions.

Gypsies arrived to Mexico during different migration waves, the most important being during the XIX century. Some came from France, Greece, and Hungry, amongst other European countries. Others arrived from countries of the American continent. Known generically as “Hungarians“, we found the Rom population, caló and ludar1, they speak their own languages aside from Spanish. Some rom arrived from Poland when it was part of Russia, the ludar arrived from the Balkans and from Rumania. Moving throughout the territory, they integrated into Mexico, others, settled temporarily or permanently in cities or regions of the country. Although the way in which they settle starts to change amongst the ludar, since some families live in fixed houses. This population reproduces itself in an ongoing interaction with non-gypsies, through commercial activities that are transformed and renewed constantly. Children and adults live their everyday life as members of the family participating in the life cycle rituals and rituals adopted in Mexico –the Virgin of Guadalupe feast.

The aforementioned brings up the following questions: Which is the social composition of gypsies? Which are the socio-cultural characteristics that define gypsies in Mexico? What are the specificities within the gypsy communities that distinguish them and / or how they regroup among them? How are interactions among gypsies and non-gypsies expressed within the different spheres of social life? What is the relationship they maintain with the Mexican State?

An ethnological study intends to answer to these questions. In order to approach the knowledge of the immersion processes which gypsies experienced in the past and in present day into Mexican society; identification of the mechanisms of their constant transformation, in order to continue reproducing themselves in the face of changes in Mexican society and in the relationship with non-gypsies; and in explaining the characteristics that identify them as Gypsies, remaining dispersed in the country.

In this ethnological study archive research and field work are indispensable in order to generate first-hand information that allows approaching their trajectory within the country, their social composition from the multi parenting they practice, their definition of gypsy, and deepen into the social, economic and ritual practices in a constant exchange with the non gypsies of Mexico.
